The dissertation analyses the phenomenon of small presses in the Nordic countries in the early twenty-first century (2000–2022). The first two decades of this century have been marked by an explosion of small presses in the Nordic region. This can be interpreted as a response to changes in the literary field induced by new technological possibilities, as well as increased power of the large publishing houses. The focus is on independent publishing houses that primarily publish fine literature and consciously inscribe themselves in the avant-garde tradition. They aim to break with the ruling cultural currents through their literary profile, publishing methods and ways of distribution. These independent publishers position themselves on the margin of the literary field and define themselves in opposition to the mainstream book market. Focal points are the distinctive self-image of the small presses and their redefinition of the connection between author, publisher and reader. Further central aspects of analysis are a focus on the materiality of books and DIY approaches, as well as the performativity of publishing practice and book launches. The theoretical framework is a synthetic combination of sociology, history of books and literary analysis. Special focus is given to paratextual analysis and the post-digital publishing practices of the presses at hand. This thesis aims to offer a better understanding of how small presses distinguish themselves in the cultural field in our contemporary period and describe the methods they apply to that end. The analysis is structured around three key aspects of the contemporary Nordic small presses – namely, the conceptual, the aesthetic and the performative aspect.
Doktorsritgerðin er helguð örforlögum á Norðurlöndum í upphafi tuttugustu og fyrstu aldar (2000–2022). Fyrstu tveir áratugir aldarinnar hafa einkennst af sprengju örforlaga á norðurslóðum. Þróuninni má lýsa sem svari við breytingum á bókmenntavettvanginum sem rekja má til tækninýjunga, en einnig sífellt vaxandi vægi stóru forlaganna. Með örforlögum er hér vísað til sjálfstæðra bókaforlaga sem stefna ekki að fjárhagslegum ávinningi og gefa einkum út fagurbókmenntir, auk þess sem þau staðsetja sig markvisst innan framúrstefnuhefðar. Forlögin stefna að umbyltingu ríkjandi fagurfræði og menningarstrauma í gegnum sjálfsmynd sína, útgáfuaðferðir og dreifingarleiðir. Þessir sjálfstæðu útgefendur staðsetja sig markvisst á jaðri bókmenntavettvangsins og skilgreina sig í andófi gegn bókamarkaði meginstraumsins. Sjónum er beint að sérstæðri sjálfsmynd örforlaga og tilraunum þeirra til að endurskilgreina sambandið á milli höfundar, útgefanda og lesanda. Auk þess er horft til efnislegra þátta í bókagerð og gerðu-það-sjálfur aðferða, sem og gjörningsþátta er snúa að útgáfu og bókahófum. Aðferðafræðilegur rammi styðst við kenningar á sviði menningarfélagsfræði, bóksögu og bókmenntafræði. Sérstök áhersla er lögð á greiningu jaðartexta og póst-stafræna útgáfu þeirra örforlaga sem tekin eru til greiningar. Markmiðið er að kanna hvernig örforlög marka sér sérstöðu innan menningarvettvangsins í samtíma okkar og greina þær aðferðir sem þau beita til þess. Greiningin er byggð upp á þremur lykilþáttum í starfsemi norrænna örforlaga samtímans: konsept, fagurfræði og gjörningar.
