A spatially explicit model for tropical tree diversity patterns
(2010-08) Horvát, Szabolcs; Derzsi, A.; Néda, Z.; Balog, A.; Department of Computer Science
A simple two-parameter model resembling the classical voter model is introduced to describe macroecological properties of tropical tree communities. The parameters of the model characterize the speciation- and global-dispersion rates. Monte Carlo type computer simulations are performed on the model, investigating species abundances and the spatial distribution of individuals and species. Simulation results are critically compared with the experimental data obtained from a tree census on a 50 hectare area of the Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. Fitting to only two observable quantities from the BCI data (total species number and the slope of the log-log species-area curve at the maximal area), it is possible to reproduce the full species-area curve, the relative species abundance distribution, and a more realistic spatial distribution of species.
Unexpected synchronization
(2009) Horvát, Szabolcs; Horváth, E. Ágnes; Máté, Gabriell; Káptalan, Erna; Néda, Zoltán; Department of Computer Science
An ensemble of oscillators capable of a highly nontrivial synchronization is investigated. The oscillators are stochastic units which can emit a signal and detect signals emitted by others. They have two operational modes characterized by two different oscillation periods. Switching between the modes is governed by a simple rule: the average output intensity is kept around a prescribed threshold. This simple dynamical rule realizes the coupling of the units and leads to a complex collective behaviour. Computer simulations proved that for a given interval of the threshold parameter, partial synchronization of the units occurs. The appearance and disappearance of this synchronization as a function of the threshold parameter indicates a phase-transition type behaviour.
From Geometry to Function : Programmable Mechanical Response in 3D-Printed Adipose-Inspired Soft Metamaterials
(2026-08-31) Berardo, Alice; Dolino, Gianmarco; Coato, Damiano; Gargiulo, Paolo; Carniel, Emanuele Luigi; Department of Engineering
Replicating the nonlinear, strain-dependent mechanics of soft biological tissues remains a central challenge in scaffold engineering, implantable devices and tissue-mimicking phantom development. Current approaches lack a systematic, experimentally validated framework that quantitatively links unit cell characteristics to macroscopic mechanical response across clinically relevant stiffness ranges. Here, we introduce a geometry-driven design strategy for 3D-printed adipose-inspired soft metamaterials, systematically varying unit cell diameter, shell thickness, orientation angle, and base material across multiple architectures. Compression experiments reveal that shell thickness governs initial stiffness and buckling onset, cell diameter controls the extent of the progressive instability plateau, and orientation angle switches the deformation mode from instability-driven buckling to progressive compaction. Finite element simulations capture these mechanisms quantitatively, while a multivariate regression model predicts effective modulus, buckling stress, and energy absorption (R2adj > 0.86). The resulting design space spans elastic moduli from units to hundreds of kPa, covering the mechanical ranges of multiple soft biological tissues, demonstrating that a single geometric framework can be systematically tuned to target diverse soft-tissue mechanical environments. This integrated experimental–computational–statistical platform establishes a mechanistic and geometry-driven design foundation that can inform the rational development of programmable soft metamaterials for regenerative scaffolds, tissue-mimicking phantoms, and soft implantable devices.
New Insights Into the Cooling of the Oceanic Lithosphere From Surface-Wave Tomographic Inferences
(2026-02-28) Latallerie, Franck; Koelemeijer, Paula; Walker, Andrew; Maggi, Alessia; Lambotte, Sophie; Zaroli, Christophe; Department of Engineering
How oceanic plates cool and thicken with age remains a subject to debate, with several thermal models supported by apparently contradictory data. Combining a novel imaging technique that balances resolution and uncertainty with finite-frequency surface-wave measurements, we build tomographic model SS3DPacific to revisit the cooling style of the oceanic lithosphere beneath the Pacific ocean. Resolution analysis indicates a strong vertical smearing that biases estimates of the apparent lithospheric thickness, limiting the ability to discriminate between the half space and plate cooling models. Laterally, a pattern of anomalous bands in seismic velocity aligned with fracture zones points to additional lateral complexities in the lithosphere, complicating simple age-trend analyses.
Breaking the glass ceiling : An interview with Yuhao (Jet) Zhou, María Óskarsdóttir, and Cristián Bravo
(2026-04-10) Zhou, Yuhao; Óskarsdóttir, María; Bravo, Cristián; Department of Computer Science
Despite years of attention to gender equality, women remain underrepresented on corporate boards. Zhou et al. explore how professional connections influence access to these positions and the reasons behind the underrepresentation. 1 In this interview, three authors reflect on the inspiration behind their research, the teamwork that shaped the project, and the key ideas underlying their analysis of gender disparities on corporate boards.
