Markmiðið með opnum aðgangi er að niðurstöður rannsókna séu aðgengilegar sem flestum óhindrað og án endurgjalds á rafrænu formi. Vistun í varðveislusafninu er varanleg og ætlað að tryggja aðgang að vísindaefni íslenskra háskóla í opnum aðgangi um ókomna tíð. Towards understanding the cathode process mechanism and kinetics in molten lif–alf3 during the treatment of spent pt/al2o3 catalysts

Electrochemical decomposition of spent catalyst dissolved in molten salts is a promising approach for the extraction of precious metals from them. This article reports the results of the study of aluminum electrowinning from the xLiF–(1-x)AlF3 melt (x = 0.64; 0.85) containing 0–5 wt.% of spent petroleum Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst on a tungsten electrode at 740–800◦C through cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results evidence that the aluminum reduction in the LiF–AlF3 melts is a diffusion-controlled two-step process. Both one-electron and two-electron steps occur simultaneously at close (or same) potentials, which affect the cyclic voltammograms. The diffusion coefficients of electroactive species for the one-electron process were (2.20–6.50)·10−6 cm2·s–1, and for the two-electron process, they were (0.15–2.20)−6 cm2·s−1. The numbers of electrons found from the chronoamperometry data were in the range from 1.06 to 1.90, indicating the variations of the partial current densities of the one-and two-electron processes. The 64LiF–36AlF3 melt with about 2.5 wt.% of the spent catalysts seems a better electrolyte for the catalyst treatment in terms of cathodic process and alumina solubility, and the range of temperatures from 780 to 800◦C is applicable. The mechanism of aluminum reduction from the studied melts seems complicated and deserves further study to find the optimal process parameters for aluminum reduction during the spent catalyst treatment and the primary metal production as well.
The role of hyperparameters in machine learning models and how to tune them

Hyperparameters critically influence how well machine learning models perform on unseen, out-of-sample data. Systematically comparing the performance of different hyperparameter settings will often go a long way in building confidence about a model's performance. However, analyzing 64 machine learning related manuscripts published in three leading political science journals (APSR, PA, and PSRM) between 2016 and 2021, we find that only 13 publications (20.31 percent) report the hyperparameters and also how they tuned them in either the paper or the appendix. We illustrate the dangers of cursory attention to model and tuning transparency in comparing machine learning models' capability to predict electoral violence from tweets. The tuning of hyperparameters and their documentation should become a standard component of robustness checks for machine learning models.
The Health-Related Quality of Life and Putative Factors of Icelandic and American Youth with Multiple Disabilities Including Visual Impairments : A Preliminary Investigation

Background/Objectives: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a critical indicator of developmental progress, educational engagement, and psychosocial resilience. By identifying both shared and context-specific differences in HRQoL, we aim to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of well-being that can inform the development of assessment approaches and future research tailored to the diverse contexts in which children with disabilities live and learn. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore HRQoL and its putative influencing factors among youth with multiple disabilities across two distinct cultural settings, the United States and Iceland. Methods: Participants (N = 26; Icelandic = 50%; Mage = 16.34 ± 2.33 years) completed height, weight, the Test of Perceived Physical Competence (TPPC), Supine-to-Stand (STS), Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA), and VISIONS QL. We conducted five, 2 group × 2 sex ANOVA and several independent samples t-tests within groups by sex for our variables of interest. Results: There was a significant difference between Icelandic boys and girls for BMI (p = 0.087, d = 0.65) and STS (p = 0.027, d = 1.04). Conversely, a significant difference was found in the American group between boys and girls for RAPA (p = 0.092, d = 0.81) and TPPC (p = 0.068, d = 0.92). Conclusions: Preliminary findings suggest that patterns in objective and self-reported health indicators may vary by context. These results highlight the importance of considering both measured performance and self-perceived health when examining HRQoL among adolescents with multiple disabilities, while underscoring the need for further research in larger samples to clarify these relationships.
Stability and gene strand bias of lambda prophages and chromosome organization in Escherichia coli

Temperate phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer is a potent driver of genetic diversity in the evolution of bacteria. Most lambdoid prophages in Escherichia coli are integrated into the chromosome with the same orientation with respect to the direction of chromosomal replication, and their location on the chromosome is far from homogeneous. To better understand these features, we studied the interplay between lysogenic and lytic states of phage lambda in both native and inverted integration orientations at the wild-type integration site as well as at other sites on the bacterial chromosome. Measurements of free phage released by spontaneous induction showed that the stability of lysogenic states is affected by location and orientation along the chromosome, with stronger effects near the origin of replication. Competition experiments and range expansions between lysogenic strains with opposite orientations and insertion loci indicated that there are no major differences in growth. Moreover, measurements of the level of transcriptional bursts of the cI gene coding for the lambda phage repressor using single-molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization resulted in similar levels of transcription for both orientations and prophage location. We postulate that the preference for a given orientation and location is a result of a balance between the maintenance of lysogeny and the ability to lyse.
Comfortable sleep monitoring : using physiological process interconnectedness during sleep for novel software sensors

Introduction: Monitoring sleep-disordered breathing typically requires many sensors, including pneumoflow masks, measuring nasal and oral airflow, and esophageal pressure catheters. While these tools provide detailed information about airflow, effort, and respiratory mechanics, they can be uncomfortable, invasive, and less feasible for long-term, home-based, or large-scale sleep studies. In contrast, respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) belts offer a non-invasive and well-tolerated alternative. Methods: In this study, we introduce four models that estimate key physiological signals from either RIP-belt data or pneumoflow mask data. Specifically, we present a heart rate model based on the RIP-belt signal, a nasal pneumoflow model estimating airflow from the RIP-belt signal, and two esophageal pressure models – one based on the RIP-belt signal, and the other one based on pneumoflow mask data. Data from 55 participants with varying degrees of sleep-disordered breathing were analyzed. Results: When fitted to each participant individually, the heart rate model as well as the nasal pneumoflow model achieved a mean Pearson correlation of 0.60. The esophageal pressure model, using RIP-belt data, yielded a mean Pearson correlation of 0.65, while the model using pneumoflow mask data yielded a mean Pearson correlation of 0.52. Discussion: Although these models do not replace gold-standard instruments, they provide physiologically interpretable estimates from non-invasive inputs and demonstrate potential for scalable, lower-burden sleep monitoring, and highlight the potential of considering physiological interconnectedness to extract desired information. Future work will focus on further validation and clinical diagnostic utility.
