Opin vísindi er varðveislusafn vísindaefnis og doktorsritgerða í opnum aðgangi á vegum íslenskra háskóla og Landsbókasafns Íslands - Háskólabókasafns.
Opinn aðgangur að rannsóknaniðurstöðum er í samræmi við 10. gr. laga nr. 3/2003 um opinberan stuðning við vísindarannsóknir sem og kröfur innlendra og erlendra rannsóknasjóða. Markmiðið með opnum aðgangi er að niðurstöður rannsókna séu aðgengilegar sem flestum óhindrað og án endurgjalds á rafrænu formi. Vistun í varðveislusafninu er varanleg og ætlað að tryggja aðgang að vísindaefni íslenskra háskóla í opnum aðgangi um ókomna tíð. Varðveislusafnið Opin vísindi er tengt við rannsóknagáttina IRIS og rannsóknaniðurstöður í opnum aðgangi sem eru skráðar í IRIS eru um leið vistaðar og gerðar aðgengilegar til framtíðar í varðveislusafninu. Með því að safna þessu efni saman í eitt safn verður aðgangur að því einfaldur og þægilegur fyrir alla sem vilja kynna sér það og geta þannig notið þess öfluga vísindastarfs sem fram fer í háskólum landsins.

Utilization of Residues from Microalgal Industries for Agricultural Practices: A comprehensive review

Global consumptions of fertilizers and freshwater have been continuously growing due to increased food demand, leading to great concerns on food security. Bio-based resilient nutrient resources such as microalgae-derived waste biomass and wastewater have gained great attention as alternative solid and liquid fertilizer resources because they contain key nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), organic compounds (acting as soil conditioner, growth stimulators), and micronutrients. Thus, microalgae-derived solid and liquid fertilizers have great potential in promoting plant growth in soil and/or hydroponic farming, controlling release of nutrients to avoid nutrient leaching and volatilization, and facilitating to achieve circular economy in microalgal industries. However, several challenges, such as imbalanced nutrient element ratios, causes of heavy metal accumulation and increased pH/conductivity, may limit their wide applications. Several recent-published review articles have documented the application of fresh microalgal biomass as fertilizer sources via direct use and conversion methods or recycling cultivation medium for microalgal growth, but no review has been conducted on utilization of microalgal processing wastewater and biomass residues for agriculture practices. Herein, this article provides a comprehensive review on the processes relating to recovery of resources (water, nutrients, valuable plant growth compounds) from microalgae processing wastewater and biomass residues generated in microalgal biorefinery industries, and identifies the key factors that are associated with the resource recovery efficiency and their effects on plant growth.

Reimagining Cross-Functional Design in the Age of AI : A Preliminary Investigation

Being cross-functional in design work can enable effective innovation, though the relevance of ‘being cross-functional’ and the related concept of ‘T-shaped’ individuals could potentially change in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Reporting results of interviews with design managers, we explore what being cross-functional means for design, the benefits and challenges inherent in cross-functional design work, and AI’s possible impact on the nature of being cross-functional during design activities. Manager responses emphasized the importance of being cross-functional in design work. Noted challenges of cross-functional work include conflicting priorities, differing opinions, unclear roles, loss of design influence, multitasking pressure, and personality differences. Noted benefits include broader viewpoint, creativity versus practicality balance, healthy tension, diverse perspectives, early issue identification, and well-rounded solutions. Regarding the effects of AI, the transformation of cross-functional work by automating routine tasks and enabling deeper data-driven insights is foreseen, but there is disagreement on the degree of change. Some see a shift in the cognitive burden on individuals, allowing them to focus more on creative and integrative tasks, others not so much. All agree that AI tools offer significant opportunities for synthesizing information and managing mundane project management tasks. Managerial and research implications are suggested.
Melatonin MT1 Receptor Expression in Luminal Invasive Ductal Breast Carcinoma in Postmenopausal Women

Laboratory and animal studies indicate that melatonin exerts a negative impact on breast cancer progression and metastasis. These actions are both receptor-dependent and -independent. Of the two transmembrane melatonin receptors identified in humans, breast cancer expresses only MT1. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of MT1 in hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative invasive ductal breast carcinoma in postmenopausal women and its possible correlations with clinicopathological parameters and survival. A total of 118 patients with luminal A/B primary breast cancer with or without axillary metastases were identified. The MT1 receptor expression was immunohistochemically assessed as a percentage of stained cells and a weighted index (WI) (percentage multiplied by staining intensity). Most tumor samples (84.7%) and metastasized lymph nodes (96%) stained positive for MT1, with varying intensity. No statistically significant correlations were found between the MT1 expression or the WI in the primary tumor and the patient and tumor characteristics, or the MT1 and WI in the metastasized lymph nodes. The survival analysis did not reveal a significant effect of MT1 expression or the WI on the risk of recurrence or survival.
