Three-dimensional holographic electromagnetic imaging for accessing brain stroke
(2018-11-09) Wang, Lulu; Department of Engineering
The authors recently developed a two-dimensional (2D) holographic electromagnetic induction imaging (HEI) for biomedical imaging applications. However, this method was unable to detect small inclusions accurately. For example, only one of two inclusions can be detected in the reconstructed image if the two inclusions were located at the same XY plane but in different Z-directions. This paper provides a theoretical framework of three-dimensional (3D) HEI to accurately and effectively detect inclusions embedded in a biological object. A numerical system, including a realistic head phantom, a 16-element excitation sensor array, a 16-element receiving sensor array, and image processing model has been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method for detecting small stroke. The achieved 3D HEI images have been compared with 2D HEI images. Simulation results show that the 3D HEI method can accurately and effectively identify small inclusions even when two inclusions are located at the same XY plane but in different Z-directions. This preliminary study shows that the proposed method has the potential to develop a useful imaging tool for the diagnosis of neurological diseases and injuries in the future.
Measuring and modelling the quality of 40 post-disaster mental health and psychosocial support programmes
(2018-02) Dückers, Michel L.A.; Thormar, Sigridur B.; Juen, Barbara; Ajdukovic, Dean; Newlove-Eriksson, Lindy; Olff, Miranda; Department of Psychology
Disasters can have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of those affected. Internationally, governments and service providers are often challenged to address complex psychosocial problems. Ideally, the potentially broad range of support activities include a coherent, high-quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programme. We present a theory-driven quantitative analysis of the quality of 40 MHPSS programmes, mostly implemented in European disaster settings. The objective is to measure quality domains recognized as relevant in the literature and to empirically test associations. During the EU project “Operationalizing Psychosocial Support in Crisis” (OPSIC) an evaluation survey was designed and developed for this purpose and completed by 40 MHPSS programme coordinators involved in different mass emergencies and disasters. We analysed the survey data in two steps. Firstly, we used the data to operationalize quality domains of a MHPSS programme, tested constructs and assessed their internal consistency reliability. A total of 26 out of 44 survey items clustered into three of the four domains identified within the theoretical framework: “planning and delivery system” (Cronbach’s alpha 0.82); “general evaluation criteria” (Cronbach’s alpha 0.82); and “essential psychosocial principles” (Cronbach’s alpha 0.75). “Measures and interventions applied”, theoretically a potential fourth domain, could not be confirmed to empirically cluster together. Secondly, several models with associations between domains and measures and interventions were tested and compared. The model with the best fit suggests that in MHPSS programmes with a higher planning and delivery systems score, a larger number of measures and interventions from evidence-informed guidelines are applied. In such programmes, coordinators are more positive about general evaluation criteria and the realization of essential psychosocial principles. Moreover, the analyses showed that some measures and interventions are more likely to be applied in programmes with more evolved planning and delivery systems, yet for most measures and interventions the likelihood of being applied is not linked to planning and delivery system status, nor to coordinator perceptions concerning psychosocial principles and evaluation criteria. Further research is necessary to validate and expand the findings and to learn more about success factors and obstacles for MHPSS programme implementation.
In Vitro and in Vivo Experimental Studies of A Novel MR-Guided Method for Bipolar Radiofrequency Liver Ablation
(2017-12-30) Jiang, Hejun; Luo, Penghui; Zhi, Debo; Qi, Fulang; Huang, Xiaoyan; Lu, Zhuo; Ge, Mengke; Wang, Lulu; Qiu, Bensheng; Department of Engineering
This paper aims to investigate the feasibility of using a parallel method for MR-guided bipolar radiofrequency ablation. Experimental validations using fresh pig livers and rabbit livers were performed on a 0.35T open MR system with MR-compatible electrodes. The comparison studies of the proposed method and the conventional method were conducted. Experimental results showed that the parallel method offers better performance than the conventional method, which shortens the puncture durations and creates more spherical ablation zones. The bipolar radiofrequency ablation was carried out successfully without causing thermal damage and puncture injury. The proposed method significantly improved radiofrequency ablation, which has the potential to become a promising tool for liver tumor ablation.
Imaging of Lung Structure Using Holographic Electromagnetic Induction
(2017-08-04) Wang, Lulu; Al-Jumaily, Ahmed M.; Department of Engineering
Early lung cancer detection with suitable treatment can significantly reduce cancer-related death rates. This paper presents a single frequency holographic electromagnetic induction (HEI) imaging method for small lung tumor detection in human thorax models. A numerical system is developed to study the feasibility of early lung tumor detection. The system includes various realistic tumors within a thorax model and a HEI measurement model. Simulation results show that various arbitrary shaped lung tumors with random sizes and locations can be identified in the thorax images. The proposed protocol has the potential for the further instantiation of lung structure.
Early diagnosis of breast cancer
(2017-07-05) Wang, Lulu; Department of Engineering
Early-stage cancer detection could reduce breast cancer death rates significantly in the long-term. The most critical point for best prognosis is to identify early-stage cancer cells. Investigators have studied many breast diagnostic approaches, including mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computerized tomography, positron emission tomography and biopsy. However, these techniques have some limitations such as being expensive, time consuming and not suitable for young women. Developing a high-sensitive and rapid early-stage breast cancer diagnostic method is urgent. In recent years, investigators have paid their attention in the development of biosensors to detect breast cancer using different biomarkers. Apart from biosensors and biomarkers, microwave imaging techniques have also been intensely studied as a promising diagnostic tool for rapid and cost-effective early-stage breast cancer detection. This paper aims to provide an overview on recent important achievements in breast screening methods (particularly on microwave imaging) and breast biomarkers along with biosensors for rapidly diagnosing breast cancer.
