Markmiðið með opnum aðgangi er að niðurstöður rannsókna séu aðgengilegar sem flestum óhindrað og án endurgjalds á rafrænu formi. Vistun í varðveislusafninu er varanleg og ætlað að tryggja aðgang að vísindaefni íslenskra háskóla í opnum aðgangi um ókomna tíð. Varðveislusafnið Opin vísindi er tengt við rannsóknagáttina IRIS og rannsóknaniðurstöður í opnum aðgangi sem eru skráðar í IRIS eru um leið vistaðar og gerðar aðgengilegar til framtíðar í varðveislusafninu. Með því að safna þessu efni saman í eitt safn verður aðgangur að því einfaldur og þægilegur fyrir alla sem vilja kynna sér það og geta þannig notið þess öfluga vísindastarfs sem fram fer í háskólum landsins.
Varðveislusafnið er OpenAIRE / OpenAIREplus samhæft og samrýmist kröfum sem gerðar eru um birtingu rannsóknaniðurstaðna úr verkefnum sem styrkt eru úr evrópsku rannsóknaáætlununum FP7 og H2020.

Development of tools and paradigms to assess brain cortical activity during cognitive tasks
(2022-12) Aubonnet, Romain; Gargiulo, Paolo; Department of Engineering
Monitoring cortical activity is essential for explaining and understanding neurophysiological behavior. A wide range of tools and experimental setups have been developed to stimulate, record, and analyze brain activity. Finding a quantitative measure to analyze this activity in a specific task is essential, as it could lead to improved diagnostic procedures, explain objective self-reported states, or monitor changes in long-term studies. This paper presents the development of tools and paradigms for assessing cortical activity during cognitive tasks. The paper presents a comprehensive set of analyses based on EEG signals, in two main areas, schizophrenia and postural control. The first part of the project evaluates the impact of potential therapeutic solutions for patients with schizophrenia. A longitudinal case study is presented, where psychological data are compared with three types of EEG data analyses: temporal, spectral, and connectivity. The small sample size prevents us from drawing definitive conclusions, but this work demonstrates the interest in using EEG measures to complete a standardized psychological assessment. The second part of the work focuses on postural control, using a novel measurement setup called BioVRSea, which combines virtual reality and a moving platform. The cortical activity of more than 150 healthy subjects has been studied in this experiment. A robust neurophysiological reference has been found using power spectral density. Moreover, by combining brain connectivity and micro-postural segmentation, network activity reveals a continuous reconstruction of the brain throughout the session, which strengthens our current understanding of complex postural control. This study highlights the real benefits of using EEG signals to infer cortical activity. The tools developed in this thesis are important for building neurophysiological signatures of specific cognitive tasks, which are important for further understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.

Youth mental health crisis : A translational view of the COVID-19 pandemic
(2025-07) Halldorsdottir, Thorhildur; Department of Psychology
Mental health problems among children and adolescents have increased over the past two decades, a trend that was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. To improve prevention and treatment strategies, developmentally informed and data-driven multidisciplinary approaches are urgently needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying youth vulnerability and resilience. Stress and trauma exposure are among the strongest predictors of youth mental health problems; however, most children and adolescents remain resilient despite such exposures. The widespread and heterogeneous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic offer a unique opportunity to examine, at scale, who develops mental health problems under stress and who remains resilient. Integrating emerging findings on pandemic-related risk and protective factors with evidence from animal models can illuminate sensitive developmental periods of heightened susceptibility to environmental influence and biological embedding. This approach can identify when, how, and through what pathways mental health problems emerge, including gene–environment interactions and epigenetic mechanisms. Such knowledge will inform both behavioral and pharmacological interventions, pinpointing not only specific treatment targets but also the optimal timing for intervention to be the most effective.
Willful inattention : Integrating visual attention mechanisms and willful ignorance
(2025-10) Orquin, Jacob L.; Pittarello, Andrea; Geng, Joy; Sigurdsson, Valdimar; Department of Business and Economics
Willful ignorance refers to the intentional avoidance of relevant information, even when access is cost-free. We integrate this concept with the idea that visual attention operates along a continuum and define willful inattention as below-baseline attention to relevant information, driven by avoidance motivation. Willful inattention allows individuals to reduce awareness of visually apparent information and plays a significant role in several domains including dishonesty and harmful consumption. We show how interventions aimed at reducing willful inattention may harm information seeking behavior and vice versa. Policies targeting heterogenous populations must therefore tradeoff capturing the attention of information seekers and avoiders.
