SMEs on the way to a circular economy : insights from a multi-perspective review
(2025-02) Ahmadov, Tarlan; Durst, Susanne; Gerstlberger, Wolfgang; Kraut, Elisabeth; Department of Business and Economics
The transition to a circular economy (CE) has garnered widespread attention as a solution to address economic, environmental, and social challenges. While large enterprises and policymakers have made steps in adopting CE practices, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face unique challenges due to limited resources and expertise. Understanding the multi-level perspective (MLP) is essential for SMEs to successfully transition to a CE, as it considers factors at the micro, meso, and macro levels. However, current research often focuses on single levels, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon through systematic research. To address this need, this study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) using the MLP framework to analyse existing research on SMEs' transition to a CE. The study aims to identify macro-, meso-, and micro-level factors, actors, and mechanisms influencing the transition process. The SLR contributes to academic understanding by developing a conceptual model that elucidates the dynamics of the circular transition process within SMEs. Additionally, it provides practical recommendations to support SMEs in navigating the transition successfully. The adoption of the MLP framework empowers SMEs, policymakers, industry associations, and consumers to play their roles effectively in driving the CE transition. While the study acknowledges certain limitations, it opens avenues for future research and enhancement of CE practices in SMEs.

Disease Burden Attributed to Drug use in the Nordic Countries : a Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019
(2025-02) GBD 2019 Nordic Drug Use Collaborators; Department of Psychology
The Nordic countries share similarities in many social and welfare domains, but drug policies have varied over time and between countries. We wanted to compare differences in mortality and disease burden attributed to drug use over time. Using results from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, we extracted age-standardized estimates of deaths, DALYs, YLLs and YLDs per 100 000 population for Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden during the years 1990 to 2019. Among males, DALY rates in 2019 were highest in Finland and lowest in Iceland. Among females, DALY rates in 2019 were highest in Iceland and lowest in Sweden. Sweden have had the highest increase in burden since 1990, from 252 DALYs to 694 among males, and from 111 to 193 among females. Norway had a peak with highest level of all countries in 2001–2004 and thereafter a strong decline. Denmark have had the most constant burden over time, 566–600 DALYs among males from 1990 to 2010 and 210–240 DALYs among females. Strict drug policies in Nordic countries have not prevented an increase in some countries, so policies need to be reviewed.

Constraining Dike Opening Models With Seismic Velocity Changes Associated With the 2023–2024 Eruption Sequence on the Reykjanes Peninsula
(2025-02) Bird, E.; Atterholt, J.; Li, J.; Biondi, E.; Zhai, Q.; Li, L.; Yang, Y.; Fang, J.; Wei, X.; Hjörleifsdóttir, V.; Klesh, A.; Kamalov, V.; Gunnarsson, T.; Zhan, Z.; Department of Engineering
The stress field perturbation caused by magmatic intrusions within volcanic systems induces strain in the surrounding region. This effect results in the opening and closing of microcracks in the vicinity of the intrusion, which can affect regional seismic velocities. In late November 2023, we deployed a distributed acoustic sensing interrogator to convert an existing 100-km telecommunication fiber-optic cable along the coast of Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula into a dense seismic array, which has run continuously. Measuring changes in surface wave moveout with ambient noise cross-correlation, we observe up to 2% changes in Rayleigh wave phase velocity (Formula presented.) following eruptions in the peninsula's 2023–2024 sequence that are likely associated with magmatic intrusions into the eruption-feeding dike. We apply a Bayesian inversion to compute the posterior distribution of potential dike opening models for each eruption by considering (Formula presented.) measurements for varying channel pairs and frequency bands, and assuming this velocity change is tied to volumetric strain associated with dike-opening. Our results are in agreement with those based on geodetic measurement and provide independent constraints on the depth of the dike, demonstrating the viability of this novel inversion and new volcano monitoring directions through fiber sensing.

Influence of substrate orientation and pre-annealing treatment on the metal-insulator transition in V2O3 films : Insights from Al2O3 r, a, c, and m-plane substrates
(2025-01-28) Taha Sultan, Muhammad; Ignatova, Kristina; Ingvarsson, Snorri T.; Arnalds, Unnar B.; Department of Engineering
We investigate the structural and metal-insulator transition (MIT) behavior of epitaxial V2O3 films fabricated by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering on r, a, c, and m-plane Al2O3 substrates, in both as-received and annealed states. Characterization of MIT of the V2O3 films grown on annealed substrates demonstrated significant changes in observed MIT properties, i.e., r-plane films showed ≈ 2 order increase in transition magnitude, m-plane ≈ 6 orders, and c-plane films exhibited a reduction of ≈ 3 orders, compared to un-annealed substrates, whereas for V2O3 on annealed a-plane, it revealed a shift in the transition to higher values, with reduction in hysteresis width. Structural characterization conducted via x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy revealed a reduction in out-of-plane compressive strain for annealed substrates, along with decreased lateral grain size. Additionally, the correlation between the V2O3 MIT and its underlying structural phase transition was verified by temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction analysis. These findings highlight the role of substrate orientation and pre-annealing in tuning the MIT behavior of V2O3 films grown on the Al2O3 substrate.

Associations between injury occurrence and environmental temperatures in the Australian and German professional football leagues
(2025-01-22) Schwarz, Edgar; Duffield, Rob; Lu, Donna; Fullagar, Hugh; Aus Der Fünten, Karen; Skorski, Sabrina; Tröß, Tobias; Hadji, Abed; Meyer, Tim; Department of Sport Science
A cross-sectional analysis was performed to investigate associations between environmental temperatures and injury occurrence in two professional male football (soccer) leagues. Data from seven seasons of the German Bundesliga (2142 matches) and four seasons of the Australian A-League (470 matches) were included. Injuries were collated via media reports for the Bundesliga and via team staff reports in the A-League and comprised injury incidence, mechanisms (contact, noncontact), locations (e.g., ankle, knee, and thigh), and types (e.g., muscle and tendon, joint and ligament). Weather data included ambient air temperature (temperature or T) and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), which were collected from online sources retrospectively. Generalized linear mixed models were analyzed to examine associations between temperature or WBGT and injury occurrence for each league, respectively. Additionally, matches were grouped into categories of 5°C temperature steps to compare for injury occurrence. Results showed no relationship existed between either temperature or WBGT and any injury occurrence, mechanisms, locations or types for the Bundesliga (P > 0.10). A trend for an increase in injury occurrence in higher WBGT existed in the A-League (P = 0.05). Comparisons between 5°C temperature categories showed no significant differences for injury occurrence for either temperature or WBGT in either League (P > 0.05). Within the observed temperature ranges (-11.2 to 37.1°C T; -12.2 to 29.6°C WBGT) environmental temperature had no relationship with the rate or type of injury occurrence in professional football. Nevertheless, the number of matches at extreme heat within this study was limited and other factors (e.g., playing intensity, season stage, ground conditions) likely co-influence the relationship with injuries.
