Opin vísindi er varðveislusafn vísindaefnis og doktorsritgerða í opnum aðgangi á vegum íslenskra háskóla og Landsbókasafns Íslands - Háskólabókasafns.
Opinn aðgangur að rannsóknaniðurstöðum er í samræmi við 10. gr. laga nr. 3/2003 um opinberan stuðning við vísindarannsóknir sem og kröfur innlendra og erlendra rannsóknasjóða. Markmiðið með opnum aðgangi er að niðurstöður rannsókna séu aðgengilegar sem flestum óhindrað og án endurgjalds á rafrænu formi. Vistun í varðveislusafninu er varanleg og ætlað að tryggja aðgang að vísindaefni íslenskra háskóla í opnum aðgangi um ókomna tíð. Varðveislusafnið Opin vísindi er tengt við rannsóknagáttina IRIS og rannsóknaniðurstöður í opnum aðgangi sem eru skráðar í IRIS eru um leið vistaðar og gerðar aðgengilegar til framtíðar í varðveislusafninu. Með því að safna þessu efni saman í eitt safn verður aðgangur að því einfaldur og þægilegur fyrir alla sem vilja kynna sér það og geta þannig notið þess öfluga vísindastarfs sem fram fer í háskólum landsins.

Challenges, Strengths, and Strategies of Software Engineers with ADHD : A Case Study

Neurodiversity describes brain function variation in individuals, including Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism spectrum disorder. Neurodivergent individuals both experience challenges and exhibit strengths in the workplace. As an important disorder included under the neurodiversity term, an estimated 5.0% to 7.1% of the world population have ADHD. However, existing studies involving ADHD in the workplace are of general nature and do not focus on software engineering (SE) activities. To address this gap, we performed an exploratory qualitative case study on the experiences of people with ADHD working in SE. We find that people with ADHD struggle with several important SErelated activities, e.g., task organisation and estimation, attention to work, relation to others. Furthermore, they experience issues with physical and mental health. In terms of strengths, they exhibit, e.g., increased creative skills, perform well when solving puzzles, and have the capability to think ahead. Our findings align with clinical ADHD research, having important implications to SE practice. Lay Abstract - Neurodiversity describes brain function variation in individuals, such as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism spectrum disorder. People included under this term often experience problems in their work, e.g., due to differences in communication or behaviour, but also exhibit strengths compared to people without these disorders. To better include them, it is essential that we understand how these challenges and strengths manifest in different professions. There is limited research on how neurodiversity affects professionals in software engineering (SE), an environment characterised by a rapid pace, frequent change, and intense collaborative work. Therefore, we studied the strengths, challenges, and strategies of SE professionals withADHD, a disorder affecting approximately 5.0% to 7.1% of the world population. We find that these professionals perceive many common SE activities as challenging, e.g., estimating how long tasks take, or maintaining focus. Interestingly, they also exhibit highly relevant strengths to the SE industry, such as increased creativity and systems thinking. Based on our findings, we provide several recommendations on how SE companies can better support employees with ADHD.
Brief announcement : Leader election in SINR model with arbitrary power control

In this article, we study the leader election problem in the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) model where nodes can adjust their transmission power. We show that in this setting it is possible to solve the leader election problem in two communication rounds, with high probability. Previously, it was known that (log n) rounds were sufficient and necessary when using uniform power, where n is the number of nodes in the network. We then examine how much power control is needed to achieve fast leader election. We show that any 2-round leader election algorithm in the SINR model running correctly w.h.p. requires a power range 2Ω(n) even when n is known. We match this with an algorithm that uses power range 2Θ(n), when n is known and 2Õ (n1.5) when n is not known. We also explore tradeoffs between time and power used, and show that to elect a leader in t rounds, a power range exp(n1/Θ(t)) is sufficient and necessary.
A Conceptual Model For Web Accessibility Requirements In Agile Development

Accessibility is the practice of making content and functionality accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities. Although accessibility is a highly relevant quality attribute, it is often treated as an afterthought in software development, unfortunately excluding people with disabilities from using many web-based systems. Specifically in agile development, sprints focus on new features and quality attributes, such as accessibility, are often not considered sufficiently. In these cases, using conceptual models to understand and analyze requirements that developers have formulated as a set of related user stories is a research opportunity. To increase agile professionals' focus on accessibility, we built a conceptual model for web accessibility, identifying artifacts and concepts used in agile development to specify accessibility. We discuss how this model can be used as a guide to better integrate accessibility considerations into agile software development. Researchers can use the result to define resources that are not currently covered or improve underutilized practices. We plan to use the conceptual model in the next steps to adapt existing agile artifacts and create support tools for web accessibility in agile development.
Economical Accommodations for Neurodivergent Students in Software Engineering Education : Experiences from an Intervention in Four Undergraduate Courses

Implementation of a whole blood programme within a blood service : Practical guidance for blood providers

Background and Objectives: Early balanced transfusion is recommended for resuscitation of patients with severe bleeding. Whole blood (WB) is reintroduced as a feasible alternative to blood components, as it includes red blood cells, plasma and platelets in a physiological ratio. Materials and Methods: In this review, we aim to provide practical guidance and a framework for blood providers aiming to implement a WB programme. The review summarizes recommendations and practical implications identified from published literature, regulatory requirements and current programmes. Results: WB donors are selected based on national donor selection criteria. When the patients' ABO-type is unknown, low titre anti-A and anti-B group-O WB (LTOWB) are recommended. ABO-group type-specific blood can be used in patients with known ABO type. Anticoagulants include CPD and CPDA-1. Leukoreduction can be performed with a platelet-sparing filter. WB is stored at +2 to –6°C for up to 35 days. Rotation of the stock and re-manufacturing to red cell concentrates minimizes outdating. The EDQM Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components provides the minimum requirements. Post-implementation follow-up includes haemovigilance and quality surveillance. End users should be involved in the development of the programme and training of personnel. Emergency collection of WB can enable transfusion to patients in remote areas, during disasters and during war. Conclusion: We conclude that implementation of a WB programme for routine and emergency management of patients with severe bleeding can be performed in a structured, safe and sustainable way.
