Saga Nonna: Ímyndir og aðdráttarafl í Nonnabókum Jóns Sveinssonar

Abstract

Saga Nonna fjallar um bernskuminningar Jóns Sveinssonar (1857–1944), Nonnabækurnar svokölluðu, ímyndir aðalsöguhetjunnar og aðdráttarafl bókanna. Nonnabækurnar eru tólf talsins. Sjö þeirra fjalla um bernskuævintýri Nonna og eru þær meginviðfangsefni þessarar ritgerðar. Þær komu út á frummálinu, þýsku, á árunum 1913–1934. Jón Sveinsson kvaddi Ísland fyrir fullt og allt tólf ára gamall, tók kaþólska trú og starfaði innan Jesúítareglunnar alla tíð. Nonnabækurnar nutu gríðarlegra vinsælda víða um lönd og Jón Sveinsson fylgdi þeim eftir með fyrirlestrum um æskuævintýri sín víðs vegar um heiminn.

Í þessari ritgerð eru Nonnabækurnar túlkaðir með því að beita aðferðum sjálfsævisagnafræða. Sýnt er fram á hvernig Nonnabækurnar hverfast um þrjú meginsvið, en það eru bernska, þjóðerni og trú. Gerð er grein fyrir lykilhugtökum í barnabókmenntarannsóknum, hugmyndinni um „barnið“ í vestrænu samfélagi ásamt því að gerð er stutt grein fyrir upphafi barnabókaútgáfu. Þessi umfjöllun myndar fræðilegan grundvöll greiningar á Nonnabókunum.

Í ritgerðinni er bæði rannsökuð sjálfsmyndasköpun Jóns Sveinssonar og persónusköpun Nonna. Jón Sveinsson fullyrti að hinn ungi, íslenski Nonni og jesúítinn Jón Sveinsson væru einn og sami maðurinn en í ritgerðinni eru færð rök fyrir að svo sé alls ekki. Í kaflanum „Íslendingurinn“ beinist athyglin að þeim þætti sjálfsmyndarinnar er snýr að upprunanum þar sem landið, þjóðin og norðrið eru í brennidepli. Í „Kaþólikkanum“ beinist athyglin að þeim þætti sjálfsmyndarinnar sem snýr að kaþólskri trú. Hér er staða Nonnabókanna sem kaþólskra barnabóka rannsökuð og það hvernig sögumanni tekst að samþætta hið lútherska upphaf Nonna á Íslandi og hinn kaþólska veruleika í Evrópu. Í „Hetjunni“ er sýnt fram á hvernig Jón Sveinsson sveigir bernskuminningar sínar að hinni gríðarvinsælu ævintýrasagnahefð og mótar Nonna sem hetju, bæði hvað varðar karlmannlegar og trúarlegar dyggðir.

Í lokakafla ritgerðarinnar er fjallað um það tímabil þegar Nonnabækurnar voru á hátindi vinsælda sinna. Rætt er um alþjóðlegar barnabækur og leitast við að meta hvort Nonnabækurnar séu dæmi um slíkar bækur, að í þeim hafi verið búið til hið alþjóðlega barn. Þetta var barn sem allir gátu samsamað sig, sigurvegari og fórnarlamb, hið hæfa barn og hið svikna barn en fyrst og fremst barnið sem alltaf þraukar og lifir af, framandi og spennandi. Þegar Evrópa var í sárum eftir styrjaldir 20. aldar var brýn þörf fyrir slíka sögupersónu, einmitt þessar bækur.

The Irresistable North: Image and attraction in the Nonni books by Jon Svensson (Saga Nonna: Ímyndir og aðdráttarafl í Nonnabókum Jóns Sveinssonar) revolves around the childhood memories of Jón Sveinsson (1857–1944), the so-called Nonnabækurnar (The Nonni books), the various images of the protagonist as well as the series’ various attractive elements which are the main theme of this dissertation. They were published in the original language, German, in the years 1913–1934. Jón Sveinsson left Iceland for good at the age of 12, converted to Catholicism and became a Jesuit priest for the remainder of his natural life. The Nonni books became well-known worldwide and Jón Sveinsson followed up on his success as a writer of children’s books and gave lectures on his childhood memoirs around the world. The Nonni books are analyzed in this dissertation using theories and themes from autobiographical studies or life writing. It is explained how the Nonni books deal with three main areas: childhood, nationality, and religion. Key concepts in children’s literature research are discussed, as well as the idea of the child in Western society and the origins of publication of children’s literature. This discussion forms the theoretical framework for the analysis of the Nonni books. This dissertation presents a research into the identity creation of Jón Sveinsson and the character creation of Nonni. Jón Sveinsson warranted that the young, Icelandic Nonni and Jón Sveinsson the Jesuit were one and the same person, but here it is argued that this is not the case. The chapter “Íslendingurinn” focuses on the parts of the identity that are connected to the origins, with special emphasis on the homeland, the nation, and the North. In “Kaþólikkinn” the focus is on the elements of the idendity that have to do with Catholicism. It researches the status of the Nonni books as Catholic children’s literature and how the narrator manages to combine Nonni’s Lutherian origins in Iceland and his Catholic life in Europe. In “Hetjan” we see how Jón Sveinsson manages to adapt his childhood memories to the widely popular tradition of the adventure story and portrays Nonni as a hero, with regards to both masculine and religious virtues. The final chapter discusses the era when the Nonni books were at the hight of their popularity, the intewar period, as well as international children’s literature and how the Nonni books fit within that tradition. It evaluates whether the Nonni books are an example of this type of literature and if it has succeeded in creating the international child which allows people to identify with as winners and victims; the capable child, the betrayed child, and primarily the child that endures and survives, always exotic and exciting. These books and this character seem to have been an answer to people’s wishes in the aftermath of the 20th century world wars in Europe.
